Apostille

An apostille is an official certification that simplifies the authentication of documents for use in countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention. This internationally recognized process confirms the authenticity of public documents.

For Hague Convention countries

The apostille is valid only in countries that have signed the Hague Convention, making it easier to use documents abroad without requiring additional legalization from embassies or consulates.

Fast and centralized through the notarial platform

In France, the apostille process is handled by the Interdepartmental Chamber of Notaries through a centralized online platform. This system ensures a fast and secure procedure. Documents are verified and apostilled by the competent authority, guaranteeing their validity for international use.

Consular Legalization

Consular legalization is required for documents intended for use in countries that have not signed the Hague Convention. Unlike the apostille, this process is more complex and involves multiple steps to confirm the document’s authenticity.

For non-signatory countries

Longer process: Ministry + Consulate

The consular legalization process is generally longer and more involved. It starts with certification by the relevant ministry in the document’s country of origin. Then, the document must be presented to the consulate or embassy of the destination country for final legalization. This double verification ensures the document complies with the legal standards of the country where it will be used.

Sworn translations completed in France

⚠️ Important: A foreign document cannot be apostilled in France. It must be certified in its country of origin.
